The origin of Lake Maggiore is certainly glacial: the arrangement of hills formed by glacial deposits is evidence of more apparent. However, it is now certain that the glacial excavation took place over an existing river valley: the profile of the lake does have the typical V-shape of the valleys.
The shores of the lake have been widely used as "mine": the finest building materials to be drawn from these shores is the Baveno pink granite, but even the stone of Angera, while the limestone quarries of Caldé provided, for centuries, the raw material for the mortar with which buildings were built in Lombardy and Piedmont, thanks to the ease of transfer by boat.
